Mikumi Walking Safari

Mikumi National Park is located about a 5 hour drive from Dar es Salaam and is home to large herds of elephants, buffalos, zebras, wildebeest, hyenas, leopards, lions, sable antelopes, and great kudu. Being more accessible from Dar es Salaam allows it to cater to tourists looking to do a safari on a budget. We have designed this itinerary with cost savings in mind, but can work with you to create the ideal itinerary that suits your needs. We also recommend you consider adding on to the trip another destination, such as the nearby Udzungwa Mountains National Park.

Bus to Mikumi

The trip will start in Dar es Salaam at the bus station early in the morning where we will take the bus to Mbeya. We can recommend a guesthouse to stay at next to the bus station. It will take about 5 hours to arrive in the village of Mikumi where we will depart and take a boda boda to Camp Bastian Mikumi.

Camp Bastian Mikumi

We will be staying two nights at Camp Bastian Mikumi, a highly rated hotel and campsite near Mikumi National Park. Our accommodations will be in tents and a full board (all meals) are provided during your stay. Feel free to spend the afternoon at the bar or pool on site, or join us to walk around the village of Mikumi.

Mikumi National Park

The next day we will head out in to Mikumi National Park for the day after breakfast. We will bring a packed lunch and do a combination of a walking safari and a game tour by vehicle. Getting out on foot and seeing the animals on the ground, with a Park Ranger for safety, is an incredible experience.

Travel to Dar es Salaam

After breakfast, we will take a local bus to Morogoro where we will connect with a bus to Dar es Salaam. Alternatively, we would be happy to extend the trip by 1 day and show you around Morogoro, including the market and several historical sites.

We price our trips based on the use of public transport or private taxis, and modest but well-maintained hotels with AC rooms and mosquito nets. We are more than happy to quote prices on request for trip options that involve higher end accommodation and private vehicles.
